our relational approach

Groundwork was founded in 2018 by Dr. Melissa Johnson and Dr. Philicia Rubin, two licensed clinical psychologists.

Our clinicians work from a relational psychodynamic perspective. In everyday terms, we explore how earlier experiences and relationships influence what you feel, expect, and do today.

You and your therapist might examine arguments that repeat, situations that bring up anxiety, or choices that leave you feeling stuck. What happens within the therapy relationship can also help you understand how you relate to others.

Your therapist participates actively by asking questions and sharing observations. We incorporate tools from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness when they fit your needs.

Our practice provides LGBTQ+ affirming care. We help match you with a clinician based on your concerns, preferences, and availability.

Individual Therapy Near Prospect Heights

Sometimes the difficulty is easy to name: persistent worry, low mood, grief, or stress at work. Other times, you may feel stuck without knowing why.

In individual therapy, you meet with one therapist to explore your experiences, relationships, and concerns. You might examine perfectionism, difficulty setting boundaries, loneliness, or a tendency to put other people’s needs ahead of your own.

We work with adults at different life stages, including people adjusting to a move, a breakup, a career change, or a new sense of what they want. Therapy gives you space to understand familiar patterns and consider different ways of responding.

Couples Therapy and Premarital Counseling

Couples Therapy Near Prospect Heights

Recurring arguments, changes in intimacy, damaged trust, and competing priorities can leave partners feeling distant. You may know something needs to change but struggle to discuss it without falling into the same conversation.

Our couples therapy helps partners understand what happens between them and explore ways to communicate more openly. Our team draws on approaches including Gottman, emotionally focused therapy, and psychodynamic couples therapy.

Preparing for Marriage or Long-Term Commitment

Moving in together or planning a shared future can raise questions about money, children, careers, intimacy, and family involvement.

Our premarital counseling program offers a semi-structured series of conversations about these subjects. A therapist helps you explore expectations, recognize strengths, and discuss differences before they become harder to address.

The program welcomes couples preparing for marriage and those building a long-term commitment without marriage.
