ADHD & Autism testing for Teens and Adults in Brooklyn
Many people reach adolescence or adulthood with a quiet but persistent feeling that they have always experienced the world a little differently.
Perhaps staying organized has always required enormous effort. Maybe social situations feel confusing or exhausting. You may have learned to hide sensory sensitivities, develop systems to stay on top of responsibilities, or push through overwhelming situations.
Whether you are seeking testing for yourself or for your teenager in Brooklyn or another location in New York, we strive to provide comprehensive ADHD and autism testing that is grounded in curiosity, compassion, and careful clinical evaluation.
Assessments Across the Lifespan
Many people are surprised to learn that ADHD and autism can be identified well beyond childhood. Adults frequently seek evaluations after recognizing patterns that have existed throughout their lives but were never fully understood.
We also understand that families may be exploring concerns for younger individuals. Our practice provides testing for both adults and teens. We are familiar with the broader landscape of ADHD and autism testing for teens, and we can help your family navigate this process pre- and post-testing.
When adhd or autism testing May Be Helpful
At Groundwork, we approach assessment as more than a process of identifying symptoms or assigning diagnoses. Our goal is to understand the whole person, including how they think, learn, relate to others, regulate emotions, and move through the world. This broader perspective can help guide treatment, deepen self-understanding, and provide practical recommendations for school, work, relationships, and everyday life.
You may have worked hard to compensate for difficulties with attention, executive functioning, or social communication without understanding why these experiences feel more challenging for you than they seem to be for others.
An ADHD or autism assessment may be helpful if you or your teenager have:
Difficulty focusing or staying organized
Social communication differences
Sensory sensitivities
Emotional regulation challenges
Suspected ADHD or autism
Desire for greater self-understanding
For many individuals, particularly women, LGBTQ+ people, and those who learned to mask or compensate early in life, neurodevelopmental differences can go unrecognized for years.
Receiving an evaluation later in life is more common than many people realize.
Comprehensive ADHD and Autism Evaluations in Brooklyn
At Groundwork, our testing process is collaborative and individualized. Evaluations can begin either in person at our Brooklyn office or remotely for individuals located elsewhere in New York. An evaluation willcan include:
Clinical interviews exploring current concerns and personal history
Developmental history to understand early patterns of learning and relationships
Standardized cognitive and psychological testing
Measures of attention and executive functioning
Social communication assessments
Questionnaires related to mood, personality, and emotional functioning
Behavioral observations throughout the evaluation process
This multi-method approach helps differentiate ADHD and autism from other experiences that can present with similar symptoms, including anxiety, trauma, learning differences, depression, or chronic stress.
Rather than relying on a single measure, we integrate information from multiple sources to develop a more complete and nuanced understanding.
Projective Testing and Deeper Psychological Understanding
When clinically appropriate, we may incorporate projective testing into the assessment process.
Projective methods offer a different way of understanding emotional experience and personality by allowing individuals to respond more freely than they would in highly structured questionnaires.
These measures may provide insight into:
Emotional regulation
Coping styles
Interpersonal expectations
Relationship patterns
Internal conflicts
Sources of stress
The ways people make meaning of their experiences
Understanding these deeper patterns can help guide treatment and provide a more complete picture of a person's emotional experience.
The goal is not simply to identify symptoms but to appreciate the broader emotional landscape in which those symptoms exist.
ADHD, Autism, and Relationships
Neurodevelopmental differences often influence the way people experience relationships.
Many couples seek testing after noticing recurring patterns that seem difficult to fully understand. Challenges with organization, follow-through, communication, sensory needs, or emotional regulation can affect both partners in meaningful ways.
Without a framework for understanding these differences, couples may find themselves caught in cycles of frustration, misunderstanding, or feeling unseen by one another.
For some people, ADHD or autism testing provides language that helps reduce blame and increase empathy within important relationships.
It can also create opportunities for future therapeutic work, helping partners better understand one another's experiences and develop more supportive ways of communicating.
Moving Toward Greater Understanding
Many people begin the assessment process because they are looking for answers. Often, they leave with something more than a diagnosis. They leave with a deeper understanding of themselves.
We believe that psychological assessment is not simply about determining what is wrong, but about understanding how a person can navigate the world and move forward with greater clarity. Whether you come to our office in Brooklyn or join us remotely from somewhere else in New York, we are here to help you gain clarity.
Meet your assessment clinician
Our ADHD and autism testing program is led by Dr. Ana Lomidze, a postdoctoral clinical psychologist with extensive experience in psychological and diagnostic testing. Dr. Lomidze brings the same curiosity, compassion, and clinical rigor to assessment that she brings to her therapeutic work, taking time to understand each person's full experience, not just their symptoms.
Dr. Lomidze earned her PsyD and MSEd from Pace University and an MA in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University. She is dedicated to helping clients and families gain clarity through a thorough, individualized evaluation process.
assessment process
step 1: initial consultation
We begin with a phone consultation about your current concerns and what you hope to gain from the evaluation process. This is also a chance to ask questions and determine if an evaluation feels like the right next step.
step 2: comprehensive clinical interview
We’ll explore your developmental history, educational and work experiences, relationships, emotional functioning, and patterns related to attention, sensory experiences, executive functioning, and social communication.
step 3: standardized questionnaires
You’ll complete evidence-based measures to help us gather information related to ADHD, autism, and overlapping concerns. When appropriate, input from parents, partners, or other important people may also be included.
step 4: cognitive & behavioral assessment (if indicated)
Structured tasks may be used to evaluate attention, memory, processing, executive functioning, and problem-solving abilities. These help provide a fuller picture of your strengths and differences.
step 5: diagnostic formulation
We integrate all gathered information to determine whether ADHD, autism, both, or another explanation best accounts for the experiences being explored. We also consider overlapping or co-occurring factors (such as anxiety, depression, or learning differences).
step 6: feedback meeting
You’ll attend a detailed feedback meeting and a comprehensive written report that explains the findings and provides personalized recommendations for treatment, accommodations, and future support.

A valuable assessment does not simply rule diagnoses in or out. Our goal is to understand the factors contributing to your experiences and provide meaningful insight regardless of the outcome. Sometimes an evaluation identifies other concerns, strengths, or patterns that can help guide future treatment and support.
-
The cost of a comprehensive psychological evaluation varies depending on the scope of the evaluation and the types of testing included. Because each evaluation is tailored to the individual and the specific referral questions, fees are discussed during the initial consultation.
Groundwork Therapy is an out-of-network provider. However, many insurance plans offer partial reimbursement for psychological testing, and some clients receive reimbursement for a significant portion of the evaluation cost (many clients get 50-80% of the fee reimbursed to them). If requested, we can provide the documentation needed for you to seek out-of-network reimbursement through your insurance company.
We encourage clients to check with their insurance provider about their specific psychological testing benefits and potential reimbursement eligibility. Common CPT codes that may be used during your evaluation process include 90791, 96130, 96136.
If you have questions about the assessment process, fees, or insurance reimbursement, we are happy to discuss your options during an initial consultation.

The timeline varies depending on the complexity of the evaluation and the questions being explored. During your initial consultation, we will discuss the anticipated timeline, testing sessions, and when you can expect feedback and a written report.
Most comprehensive evaluations take place over multiple appointments and include time for scoring, interpretation, and report writing. The client’s participation typically requires about four hours in the office.

These methods can provide insight into emotional processes, personality patterns, and interpersonal dynamics, helping clinicians understand the broader psychological context in which symptoms occur.
