Therapy Services for park slope residents
Individual Therapy
You may feel overwhelmed by work, struggle with persistent worry, or notice the same difficulties appearing in different relationships. You may want space to understand yourself without having a particular diagnosis or crisis.
In individual therapy, we explore your experiences, emotions, and relationships together. Your therapist helps you understand familiar patterns and consider different ways of responding to them.
Couples Therapy
Relationships can become strained by recurring arguments, changes in intimacy, damaged trust, or decisions about the future. For parents, raising children can also bring disagreements about responsibilities and leave less time for connection.
Our couples therapy helps partners slow down difficult conversations and understand what happens between them. Our team draws on approaches including Gottman, emotionally focused therapy, and psychodynamic couples therapy.
We welcome couples with and without children, married and unmarried partners, and people in monogamous and polyamorous relationships.
Teen Therapy
Academic expectations, the high school admissions process, friendships, and questions about identity can place pressure on teenagers. Sometimes parents notice changes in mood or behavior before their teen feels ready to discuss them.
Teen therapy gives adolescents space to speak with a therapist who listens and takes their concerns seriously. We collaborate with parents or caregivers when appropriate, with attention to the teen’s privacy, trust, and needs.
group therapy
You may feel isolated in your experiences, find yourself repeating familiar patterns in relationships, or want to better understand how you relate to others. Group therapy offers an opportunity to explore these experiences in a supportive setting with other people.
In group therapy, members work together to understand their relationship patterns, share perspectives, and experiment with new ways of connecting. Our interpersonal process groups offer space to develop greater self-awareness and experience how relationships can change through meaningful interactions with others.
family therapy
Family members can care deeply about one another and still struggle to communicate. Conflict may arise around parenting, caregiving, boundaries, or changing roles as children become adults.
In family therapy, we help parents, adult children, siblings, and other family members understand their interactions and work toward more productive conversations.
Support Through Parenting and Life Transitions
Becoming a parent can change your sense of identity, your relationships, and the time available for yourself. Fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, pregnancy, and the postpartum period can bring experiences that are difficult to discuss elsewhere.
Our perinatal and parental mental health services offer space to explore those changes without pressure to feel a certain way.
We also support adults navigating career changes, grief, burnout, and other transitions. Therapy can help you make sense of what is shifting and what you need next.
ADHD and Autism Assessments for Teens and Adults
If you or your teenager have questions about longstanding differences in attention, organization, sensory experiences, or social communication, an evaluation may help clarify them.
Our ADHD and autism assessments combine interviews, standardized measures, and developmental history to guide recommendations. Findings may support treatment planning and requests for school or workplace accommodations.
Evaluations can begin in person or remotely across New York. During the consultation, we discuss which components may require an office visit.
Our Approach and Finding Your Therapist
Groundwork was founded in 2018 by Dr. Melissa Johnson and Dr. Philicia Rubin. Our approach is relational and psychodynamic: we explore how earlier experiences and relationships influence your feelings, expectations, and choices today.
Your therapist participates actively, asking questions and sharing observations. We incorporate tools from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) when they fit your needs.
Our team helps match you with a clinician based on your concerns, preferences, and availability. We provide affirming care for LGBTQ+ individuals, couples, and families.
