individual therapy for anxiety & depression

Anxiety Therapy

You may be dealing with persistent worry, low mood, burnout, loneliness, or relationship difficulties that keep repeating. You may also want to understand yourself more deeply without having a specific diagnosis or immediate crisis.

In individual therapy, we explore your concerns, relationships, and experiences together. The work can help you recognize familiar patterns, understand your reactions, and develop more options for responding.

Depression Therapy

Low energy, loss of interest, irritability, or feeling emotionally flat can make everyday life difficult. Continuing to work or care for others does not mean your distress deserves less attention.

Our depression therapy provides space to explore your feelings, relationships, and experiences. We also work with you on routines and coping strategies that fit your current needs.

If medication is something you want to consider, your therapist can discuss seeking an evaluation with a psychiatrist.

Support Through Life Changes

Individual therapy can also support you through grief, divorce, retirement, caregiving, career changes, or children leaving home.

You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to begin. Sometimes the starting point is simply wanting to understand why you feel stuck.

couples, teens, & group therapy

couples therapy

Demanding schedules, recurring arguments, changes in intimacy, and damaged trust can leave partners feeling distant. Major decisions about parenting, careers, or the future can also bring differences into focus.

Our couples therapists help partners understand their interactions and discuss difficult subjects more openly. Our team draws on approaches including Gottman, emotionally focused therapy, and psychodynamic couples therapy.

We welcome queer and straight couples, married and unmarried partners, and people in monogamous and nonmonogamous relationships.

therapy with teens

Academic expectations, friendships, family relationships, and questions about identity can feel overwhelming during adolescence.

Our teen therapists give young people space to speak with someone who listens and takes their concerns seriously. We collaborate with parents or caregivers when appropriate, with attention to the teen’s privacy, trust, and needs.

group therapy

You may notice a gap between the relationships you want and how you feel when you’re with others. Perhaps you tend to put other people’s needs first, pull away when you feel vulnerable, or struggle to say what is on your mind. Group therapy offers a place to explore these patterns as they emerge in relationships.

For Brooklyn Heights residents, Groundwork Therapy’s interpersonal process groups offer support at our Crown Heights practice. By sharing experiences and reflecting on interactions within the group, members can better understand themselves and how others experience them. Over time, this work can help you become more comfortable expressing your needs, building trust, and finding greater closeness with others.

Our relational approach

Waiting room at Groundwork Therapy, a psychotherapy practice in Brooklyn, New York

Groundwork was founded in 2018 by Dr. Melissa Johnson and Dr. Philicia Rubin, two licensed clinical psychologists.

Our clinicians work from a relational psychodynamic perspective. In everyday terms, we explore how earlier experiences and relationships influence your feelings, expectations, and choices today.

You and your therapist may examine familiar reactions, recurring conflicts, or patterns that appear across different relationships. What happens within the therapy relationship can also help you understand how you connect with others.

Your therapist participates actively by asking questions and sharing observations. We incorporate tools from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness when they fit your needs.

We provide LGBTQ+ affirming care, with respect for your identity, background, and relationship structure.

Our team helps match you with a clinician based on your concerns, preferences, and availability.
