roman stark, MSW | Therapist
Roman is a depth-oriented therapist who provides long- and short-term psychotherapy to couples and individuals. He provides treatment for depression, anxiety, life transitions, self-esteem issues, and challenging interpersonal patterns. He works with clients who have existential concerns, wish to deepen self-understanding, and want to live with more integrity and courage.
Roman’s areas of particular clinical experience or interest include trans and non-binary self-determination, masculinity issues, grief and loss, substance use, trauma, creativity, and the psychic impacts of stigma, racism, and oppression. He greatly enjoys working with LGBTQ+ people of all ages and backgrounds.
Roman’s approach to psychotherapy addresses the resonances between the client’s important earlier relationships and their current ways of relating and feeling, including in the relationship between the therapist and client. He prioritizes creating trust in the therapeutic relationship and cultivating a shared curiosity about the patient’s inner life. Roman is committed to understanding and noticing how structural oppression manifests in the space of therapy, with the hope of continually growing his awareness of the reality that will allow for more of the patient to come into the room. He believes authenticity and a sense of humor are indispensable to effective therapy. Roman also incorporates mindfulness skills, somatic awareness, and trauma-informed regulation into his practice as indicated.
Roman brings a sex-positive and feminist orientation to working with couples. He actively facilitates, helping pairs to understand and work with their different communication and attachment styles.
Roman holds a Clinical MSW from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College with a specialization in mental health; an MA in Curatorial Studies from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College; and a BFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute.
