PHILICIA RUBIN, PSYD | Co-Director & Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Philicia Rubin is a licensed clinical psychologist who provides psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, and couples. Her work centers on helping individuals better understand who they are, how they came to be that way, and how they want to move through the world with greater clarity and authenticity. She has particular expertise in working with depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, and concerns related to gender, sexuality, and identity.

Dr. Rubin strives to help her clients feel more comfortable being fully themselves. She supports clients in exploring the deeper roots of their thoughts, emotions, and patterns, with particular attention to how early experiences and family dynamics shape the ways they relate to themselves and to others. This process often leads to a stronger sense of self, more flexibility in relationships, and a greater capacity to navigate life transitions and uncertainty.

Dr. Rubin also works closely with couples at different relationship stages. She helps partners identify and better understand recurring patterns in how they communicate, connect, and respond to one another. Together, she works with couples toward developing more intentional, effective, and meaningful ways of relating.

Her therapy approach is relational and psychodynamic, grounded in the idea that insight and connection are key drivers of change. She views therapy as a collaborative process and enjoys thinking out loud with her clients as they make sense of their experiences together. She places strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and strives to create a space where clients feel comfortable and understood. Dr. Rubin is known for being down to earth, easy to connect with, and brings warmth, curiosity, and a thoughtful sense of humor into the therapy room.

Dr. Rubin is the co-founder of Groundwork Therapy, which she established with her wife. In addition to her clinical work, she also created a Brooklyn-based community for local group practice owners, fostering connection and collaboration among peers.

Prior to founding Groundwork Therapy, she held a longstanding position at Fordham University’s Counseling and Psychological Services, where she served as Group Therapy Program Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, and Supervising Psychologist. She also has extensive experience supervising and mentoring early-career clinicians.

She earned her PsyD in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco, her MS in psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her BS in psychology from the University of Florida.
